Shakespeare, William, THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE, FROM THE ORIGINAL TEXT: CAREFULLY COLLATED AND COMPARED WITH THE EDITIONS OF HALLIWELL, KNIGHT, AND COLLIER: WITH HISTORICAL AND CRITICAL INTRODUCTIONS, AND NOTES TO EACH PLAY; AND A LIFE OF THE GREAT DRAMATIST BY CHARLES KNIGHT. New York: Martin, Johnson, and Company, [1856].  Three volumes complete set, 1/2 polished calf/marbled paper hardcover, 5 raised ribs, black tooling w/paper labels to spine, 4to (10.750 x 8.250"), good + / n.a., vol.1: Comedies, [i-v], vi, [vii], viii-liv, 1-642 pp., vol.2: Histories, 643-1097 pp., vol.3: [1098], 1099-1725 p.p.  Overall bumping, rubbing, chipping and wear to bindings, (still quite impressive), a small amount of foxing and staining to text blocks never effecting the text or plates, wonderfully age toned to period.  Beautiful marbled end-papers,  all three volumes exquisitely, and heavily, illustrated with full size b/w plates.
The date is not given on the title page or verso thereof, the date in brackets is the date at the bottom of most of the plates, including the title page plates of vols. two and three. The engravings are by J.C. Buttre.  If one is a fan of Shakespeare they may well spend many hours among this splendid 1856 reprint of at least most of his works.  Quite the time capture - a distinctive set of books indeed!
